What Documents Do You Need for Customs Clearance in Latvia?
One of the most common reasons for customs delays is incomplete documentation.
The paperwork requirements depend on the type of declaration — import, export, or transit — and the nature of the goods. But there is a core set of documents that applies to almost every air freight shipment through Latvia.
For standard imports you will need: an airway bill (AWB), commercial invoice, packing list, and a power of attorney authorizing your broker to act on your behalf.
Depending on the goods, you may also need: a certificate of origin, import licence, phytosanitary certificate, conformity declaration, or product-specific permits.
For excise goods — alcohol, tobacco, fuel — additional excise documentation and guarantees are required.
For dangerous goods shipped by air, IATA DGR documentation must be prepared by a certified specialist. At LETT 2000, two of our team members hold current IATA DGR certificates.
The most important thing is to prepare documents before your cargo arrives. Customs clearance at Riga Airport can be completed in 2-4 hours with proper documentation. Without it, the same shipment can sit in temporary storage for days.
Our team reviews all documentation before submission to catch errors that would trigger delays or inspections.
